Ward 6 Democrats Call for Transparency, Accountability and Respect for Home Rule in Filling Anticipated At-Large Council Vacancy
The Ward 6 Democrats today reaffirmed its support for the DC Democratic Party and its commitment to a transparent, inclusive and lawful process for filling the anticipated vacancy in the Democratic At-Large seat on the Council of the District of Columbia, currently held by Councilmember Robert White.
The District's Home Rule Charter establishes the framework for filling vacancies on the Council, including the role of the DC Democratic State Committee in selecting an interim Democratic representative, when applicable, until voters have the opportunity to elect their representative through a special election.
The Ward 6 Democrats strongly support a selection process that prioritizes transparency, public participation and accountability. The appointment of an interim Councilmember must reflect the principles of representative democracy and preserve the integrity of the District's established electoral procedures.
"The process for filling a vacancy on the Council must be guided by the law, not political convenience," said the Ward 6 Democrats. "District residents deserve a transparent process that respects the authority of the DC Democratic Party, provides meaningful opportunities for public input and ultimately preserves the right of voters to choose their elected representatives."
Any effort to circumvent the legally established process would undermine public confidence in the District's democratic institutions and raise serious concerns about respect for Home Rule. The Ward 6 Democrats firmly oppose any attempt to bypass the appropriate selection procedures or diminish the role of District voters in determining their representation.
The organization calls upon all Democratic elected officials, including Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, to publicly affirm their commitment to the Home Rule Charter and the integrity of the established vacancy-filling process.
"Home Rule is more than a governing framework. It is a fundamental expression of the District's right to self-governance," the organization added. "Protecting that right requires every elected official to uphold the processes established by law, particularly when political circumstances make those principles inconvenient."
The Ward 6 Democrats remain committed to working with the DC Democratic Party to ensure that any interim appointment is conducted openly, lawfully and with meaningful community engagement.
The principle is clear: The process must be transparent, the law must be respected, and the voters must have the final say.
