Make A Plan to #VoteSafe This Fall

First of all, YES, YOU CAN STILL VOTE IN PERSON. But many of us would prefer not to because of the pandemic, and the DC Board of Elections has gone above and beyond to provide options.

    Here's a run-down of the situation:

    1. The Board of Elections is automatically mailing absentee ballots to every registered voter.
    2. Those ballots have started arriving.
    3. If you're going to vote by mail, you can send your ballot back through the USPS, no stamp required.
    4. You can also fill out your mail ballot and put it in one of the BOE's secure drop boxes. All the drop box locations are on the BOE website: https://dcboe.org/Voters/Where-to-Vote/Mail-Ballot-Drop-Sites
    5. The last official day to register to vote is October 13 (THAT'S TOMORROW). Get registration information at the BOE website: https://dcboe.org/Voters/Register-To-Vote/Register-to-Vote
    6. After October 13, you can still register, but you will have to register and vote in person.
    7. If your absentee ballot does not arrive il the mail by October 21, you should plan to vote in person.
    8. Early voting opens October 27. All the early voting locations are on the BOE website: https://earlyvoting.dcboe.org
    9. A list of all the election day precincts is also available on the BOE website: https://dcboe.org/Voters/Where-to-Vote/Election-Day-Vote-Centers
    10. Due to the pandemic, any voter in DC can vote at any in-person voting location.
    11. If you decide to use your mailed ballot to vote, whether you send it back via the USPS or put it in a secure drop box, the BOE has a ballot tracker you can register with to be updated about the status of your ballot: https://votedc.ballottrax.net/voter/

Our CM Charles Allen has also summarized this information on his website at: http://www.charlesallenward6.com/how_to_vote

Editor's note: I put my own ballot in the Northeast Library secure drop box and registered fro the ballot tracker app on Monday, October 5. I got the notification that my ballot had been received by the BoE on Saturday, October 10.

  • Help #FlipTheSenateBlue This Fall AND Support DC Statehood

Our Ward 6 Dems community of 20+ volunteers has written more than 2,000 postcards in support of the campaigns of Rep. Abigail Spanerger and Rep. Elaine Luria in Virginia as well as Senate challenger Theresa Greenfield in Iowa.

But there's more work to do to flip the US Senate blue this November. We have the opportunity to send a strong DC Statehood signal by actively supporting the Democratic candidates who have voiced their public support for making us the 51st state.

One way you can help is to donate to any/all of the following Senate candidates through dedicated "51st State" links.

Let's make sure their Statehood support matters!

We need your help to turn out votes in the District, too. Council member Robert White, the only Democratic At-Large candidate this year, has reached out to the Ward 6 Dems for support.

You can request your Re-elect Robert White yard sign here.

CM White also needs volunteers to phone bank, share campaign literature with neighbors, or host your own virtual meet & greet. Email Matt LaFortune at [email protected] if you're able to support CM White's campaign in any of those ways.

US Census: Good News, Bad News

The good news on the US Census is that, thanks to the tireless efforts of activists and advocates, the Trump administration has been thwarted in their attempt to end data collection early. That means you have until Saturday, October 31 to complete your 2020 census.

The bad news is that DC is still lagging badly in our response rate. We’re 13th from the BOTTOM of the list of 52 US states (or future states) for Census response rates. BILLIONS of dollars in DC’s federal food, health, and housing aid all depend on an accurate and complete count.

If you haven't completed the Census, you can do so right now online at: https://my2020census.gov/It only takes about 10 minutes.

If you have already responded, remind your friends and neighbors to do the same by posting the link to any neighborhood listservs or groups you belong to: https://my2020census.gov/.

    Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton

    by Marci Hilt

October’s Woman of Ward 6 is Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who is now in her 15th term as the congresswoman for the District of Columbia. She has been a tireless advocate for Statehood for DC residents, as well as working to preserve and create jobs for DC residents.

“After 219 years of Congress denying DC residents congressional voting rights and full local self-government,” she recently said, “we are on the cusp of another historic first for DC statehood in a year of historic firsts for DC statehood. Americans living in all 50 states recognize that this is a fight for fairness and equal representation.”

    A Message from Charles Allen

    Dear Ward 6 Democrats,

I don’t have to tell you how crucial this year’s election is. On the national stage, electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris (and defeating Donald Trump) couldn’t be more important and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

But this year’s election is crucial in DC as well. Who we elect represents our values, our priorities, and our vision for the place we call home. I’m asking you to help me re-elect Robert White as an At-Large member of the DC Council.

As your Councilmember, I want you to know how much I trust and work with Robert at the Council. When there’s an important issue for Ward 6 - whether it’s funding our local schools, focusing on affordable housing, prioritizing our local businesses and neighborhoods - I know Robert will be there with me. And as our city and nation wrestle to address systemic racism and right historic wrongs, Robert has been an incredible partner to build a more just city.

He’s been fighting for all residents and like me, Robert is a leader that works to bridge divides and move the District forward. At a time when the city we love is facing so many challenges and crises - and the pain cuts so unevenly across neighbors - Robert White is someone that we trust to make the right call and right decision.

You have two votes to cast for At-Large members of the Council. Please re-elect Robert White with your first vote on this year’s ballot!

Thank you and remember to vote early and vote safe!

    Charles Allen

  • DC Democratic State Committee Virtual Debate Watch Party: Tuesday, September 29

The DC Democratic State Committee is hosting a virtual presidential debate watch party TOMORROW night Tuesday, September 29, starting at 8:00 p.m.

The first few minutes will be devoted to Flip NC Blue for DC, the DC DSC's main non-DC GOTV project. North Carolina is a battleground state which Obama carried in 2008 and lost in 2012, and then Trump carried in 2016. This project is designed to help Biden/Harris carry NC, flip the U.S. Senate seat, and support NC state legislative candidates who support DC statehood.

    RSVP at: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcpc--ppj0rE9W-6QADcLRLpETczcitGI-0.

    Help Elect Democrats Outside DC

The Ward 6 Dems have just about wrapped up our postcards to voters operations. Campaigns are ending this phase of voter outreach a little on the early side this year because of USPS delays and because so many people are voting early and/or absentee/by mail this fall. In Virginia alone, volunteers wrote more than 435,000 postcards to voters. Now, we didn't do all of those ourselves, but our efforts contributed to that MASSIVE voter outreach. Great work, people!

The next phase of outreach for the campaigns we're supporting - Rep. Elaine Luria (VA-02), Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), Theresa Greenfield (Senate challenger in Iowa), and Jaime Harrison (Senate challenger in South Carolina) - will be phone and text banking.

The Luria campaign is training text bankers TODAY, Monday, September 28, and the Harrison campaign will be training virtual volunteers on Wednesday, September 30. Information about both is available on the Ward 6 Dems online calendar.

  • ALERT: Census Data Collection Ends THIS Wednesday, September 30

Although activists are still fighting in the courts to extend the US Census deadline, victory is far from assured, and we are nearly out of time to get every DC resident counted in the US Census. The District's response rate is currently 62.2%, 3.5% behind the national rate. We are at serious risk of losing critical federal funding if we don't catch up.

If you haven't completed the Census, you can do so right now online at: https://my2020census.gov/It only takes about 10 minutes.

If you have already responded, remind your friends and neighbors to do the same by posting the link to any neighborhood listservs or groups you belong to: https://my2020census.gov/.
